What is a Massage?
Although several special instruments have been developed to use in massage, the most satisfying massage is still that administered using the hands. Perhaps there is special power in the human touch. Maybe it's just more relaxing because of the human contact.
Massage on healthy tissue feels good. The most effective and the deepest massage works with the body's natural responses, rather than against them. Always tell your therapist if you feel any discomfort so the pressure can be adjusted to your comfort level.
Massage used to address a painful injury or trigger points can cause discomfort, which usually lessens once the muscles are loosened and warmed. Your massage therapist knows ways to minimize discomfort and will work carefully within what feels right for you.
After the deeper work, rhythmic, percussive movements with the fingertips or soft fists may be applied. Your therapist will move across the area just worked to increase the surface blood supply and stimulate the nerves. You will then be lightly brushed to give a sense of closing, deep relaxation, and cleansing.
